Benefits to researchers

Most research data is now ‘born digital’ which means it is vulnerable, yet researchers are obliged to retain the data for up to 15 years in some cases. Good practice, in relation to the management of digital research data, will guard against catastrophic loss. Good practice is the result of careful planning.

This workshop will discuss the main issues that should be the focus of any data management plan including:      

• establishing the ownership of the data
• determining requirements for documentation
• data organisation (including version-control and filenaming)
• durable formats which will last until the end of the retention period (and beyond)
• storage options
• managing access appropriately
• options for publishing data
• secure disposal

‘ERA results a rank tool for students’ (The Australian)

The article makes the point that, in the future, each University’s quality ranking for specific disciplines (based on ERA) will influence student enrolments.

Current status indicators gives no indication of the strength of any specific discipline within the University. Many students have enrolled at a prestigious university only to find that their specific discipline is not one of its strong points.

‘Let Internet replace journals’ (The Australian)

This article exposes the absurdity of the current scholarly publishing system where universities pay for research articles to be written, they pay academics to peer review articles, they pay academics to act as editors for journals, some academics even copy-edit and present camera ready articles to the publishers – who then sell the articles back to those same universities at ridiculous prices.

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has recently announced that Scopus will provide citation information for the full Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative in 2010.

QUT Library is now considering a subscription to Scopus for 2010 as we currently do not have access.

The Office of Research and the QUT ePrints team are offering an information session for researchers about the various collections of QUT research publications across QUT.

 The session will cover:

 Different publication collections (HERDC, Scholarly, Pre-QUT & QUT ePrints)

• Publications and your research performance profile
• Submission of your publications (when, where, by whom, which version, etc)
• Viewing and editing your research profile on RAD
• Your publications and ERA (Research Excellence for Australia), the national research evaluation framework
• Promoting your publications via QUT ePrints (and how this can increase your citation rate)

 Come to the session and learn how you can make sure that your research publications are never overlooked.
